Welcome to the Australasian Evolution Society

Welcome to the Australasian Evolution Society web page. The aims of our relatively young society are to foster interest and intellectual exchange among those interested in all facets of evolution. The society intends to realise these aims by holding a conference every two years, and by various exchanges fostered by this web page.

The society was established in 1998 at the University of Queensland, and the intention of members is to make it grow and persist as a vigorous and stimulating forum. Membership costs Au$40 (Au$20 for students and retirees) and covers the period up to the end of 2007. I therefore encourage you to join the society, if you have not already done so, to participate at our conferences and to contribute to the web page.

We have an exciting set of plans in place for 2006-7, the highlight of which is the 5th AES Conference at the University of New South Wales, Sydney from 13-15 June 2007. The conference will closely precede the SSE/ASN/SSB meetings which are to be held in Christchurch, NZ from 16-21 June 2007. This is the first time the SSE/ASN/SSB meetings have been held outside north America, and we hope that many people coming to Auckland will include a trip to the AES meetings in Sydney.

Other plans include the development of a strategy and information resources that will increase the profile of evolutionary biology and foster greater interaction among members and institutions within the region. We are particularly interested in working with members to engage the local, national or international media on matters evolutionary and assisting members who are planning to engage government at any level. Our first project is to update the Evolution Research information on the website to provide a comprehensive profile of evolution research in the region. I will shortly be in touch with members to initiate this.
