The Australasian Evolution Society and the Australian Section of the International Union for the Study of Social Insects will hold a combined biennial meeting at the Rydges Convention Centre in Townsville, Nth Queensland, September 24 – 27th 2011. All interested researchers are invited to participate in what promises to be a vibrant event in beautiful tropical North Queensland. This meeting will continue the tradition of bringing together researchers from a wide range of disciplines to explore current topics in evolutionary biology. Previous meetings have looked at topics ranging from traumatic insemination (yes, it is unpleasant) and sexual mimics, through to coalescent theory, and the history of the friction between science and religion. The meeting is also relatively small, so there is a real chance for people to meet and mingle. If you have ever wondered what a quantitative geneticist looks like, and whether, in fact, all theoreticians have crazy hair, here’s your chance to find out. This is also the first AES meeting to be held in the tropics, the cradle of our planet’s biodiversity, and an exciting place for any biologist. Townsville is just up the road (by Australian standards) from the Great Barrier Reef, the World Heritage Wet Tropics rainforest, and the vast wet-dry savanna of Australia’s north. Take your pick.
