Iguanian lizards primarily communicate using visual displays during territorial disputes and courtship. The complexity of these displays varies with social context and species. Using video playback techniques and comparative analyses, Terry Ord and colleagues are using this unique system to test commonly held theories of how animal communicative systems have evolved.
